Very few visa refusals happen because the applicant was unsuitable. Most happen because of a document problem: a bank statement that stops three weeks before the appointment, a salary slip that does not match the bank credit, a covering letter that names dates the hotel booking contradicts, or an ITR that was filed the same week the application was submitted.

Below is the full set of documents a consulate can ask for. No single applicant needs all of them. What you need depends on your visa type, your destination and whether you are salaried, self employed, a student, a homemaker or retired. Bring your passport to the office and we will mark up your personal list in one sitting.

The stages your certificate passes through

Attestation is a sequence, not a single step. An educational certificate typically goes through university verification, then state HRD or notary attestation depending on the document, then Ministry of External Affairs attestation, and finally attestation at the embassy of the destination country. A personal document such as a marriage or birth certificate follows the Home Department route instead of HRD.

Each stage has its own turnaround, and the total time depends on which state issued the certificate and how quickly the issuing university responds to verification. We give you a stage by stage status rather than a single vague waiting period.

Photograph specification

A common rejection cause

Photograph rejections are frustrating because they cost an entire appointment slot. Specifications differ by country, so confirm yours with us before you go to the studio, but these rules apply almost everywhere.

  • Plain white or off white backgroundNo pattern, no shadow behind the head
  • Matt finish, not glossyGlossy prints are refused at most centres
  • Recent, taken within the last six monthsMust look like you do today
  • Full face, front view, eyes openNeutral expression, mouth closed
  • No spectaclesNow refused by the USA and several other consulates
  • Head covering only for religious reasonsFace must remain fully visible from chin to forehead
  • No uniformEveryday clothing, avoid white tops against a white background
  • Correct sizeThe USA uses 2x2 inch, Schengen and the UK use 35x45 mm
